Experience Shinagawa's history from the Ōmori Shell Mounds to the present day through valuable artifacts and models. The perfect museum for learning about the area's rich past.
The Shinagawa Ward Museum of History is a museum showcasing the history and culture of Shinagawa Ward, displaying local historical materials, artifacts, and models. The exhibition halls allow you to experience Shinagawa's history from the Ōmori Shell Mounds to the present day through valuable materials and models. Highlights include a reproduction model of the Ōmori Shell Mounds and a diorama of Shinagawa-juku (post town). Exhibits also showcase Edo period household items and materials illustrating Shinagawa Ward from the Meiji period onwards. The museum also houses a shoin (study) and a tea room, offering a close-up look at the architectural styles of the time. The shoin is a faithful reconstruction, utilizing as many original materials as possible. It features rooms of 10 tatami mats, 12.5 tatami mats, a pantry with two rooms, and a 32-tatami mat corridor. The tea room, known as "Shōteki-an," remains in its original state and includes rooms of 2 tatami mats (with a central partition), 3 tatami mats, and 4.5 tatami mats, as well as a pantry. Both the shoin and the tea room allow visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past. About a 5-minute walk from the museum is the Ōmori Shell Mounds Garden, the site of the Ōmori Shell Mounds excavation. The garden displays remains of the shell mounds and materials illustrating the lives of people in the Jomon period. The Shinagawa Ward Museum of History is a museum enjoyable for everyone, whether or not they have a specific interest in the history of Shinagawa Ward. We highly recommend a visit.
