A venerable temple with over a thousand years of history, offering a tranquil space surrounded by beautiful nature.
Hashikura-ji Temple is a branch temple of the Shingon sect located in Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. It is said to have been founded in 828 AD (Tencho era) by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), following an oracle from Konpira-jinja Shrine. He built the seven halls and pagodas on this site. Also known as the Konpira Oku-no-in (inner sanctuary), it has long been a center of faith for the people. The temple grounds house numerous Buddhist statues and paintings, including the principal image of an Eleven-headed Kannon statue, said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi himself. One particular highlight is the kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden that appears after passing through the mountain gate. Borrowing the scenery of the majestic Yoshino River and the Asa-San mountain range, the garden, made of white sand and stones, exudes a simple yet profound beauty. You can enjoy the seasonal landscapes, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall, offering beautiful views throughout the year. Furthermore, Hashikura-ji Temple is also known as a filming location for the anime "Natsume's Book of Friends". Experiencing the landscapes and atmosphere featured in the anime is another of its charms.
