Overview

Iwaya Kumanoza Shrine, located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, has long been cherished by the local community. Known for its strong remnants of syncretic Shinto-Buddhist practices (Shingon-Buddhism), the shrine boasts numerous historically significant structures, including the nationally Important Cultural Property Ryubu Torii gate and the main hall, which blends architectural styles from the Tensho period (late 16th century) to the early Edo period (early 17th century). The Ryubu Torii gate is uniquely constructed from tuff stone and features rare supporting child pillars (chigobashira). These small pillars between the main pillars symbolize the sacredness of the place. Erected in 1701, this torii gate exemplifies the advanced architectural techniques of its time. The main hall, with its mixed architectural styles spanning from the Tensho period to the early Edo period, is a historically valuable structure. The shrine is surrounded by abundant nature, providing a tranquil space for quiet contemplation. Iwaya Kumanoza Shrine offers a journey through history and culture, while simultaneously providing a serene natural setting perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation. Make sure to visit when in Hitoyoshi.
