Overview

Takakamo Shrine is located in the eastern foothills of Mount Kongo, in Kamogami, Gose City, Nara Prefecture. It's a Sukuné-sha (式内社) shrine, specifically a Myōjin Taisha (名神大社), and its former official ranking was Kenja (県社). It's considered the head shrine for all Kamo (鴨・賀茂・加茂) shrines throughout Japan, including Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. It's referred to as "Kamigamo-sha" (上鴨社) in relation to Kuzuki Miya Toshi Jinja (中鴨社) and Kamo Tsuha Jinja (下鴨社). This area is said to be the origin of the Kamo clan, and the shrine was established as their tutelary deity. The Kamo clan spread from these hills to the Nara Basin; those who settled by the Katsuragi River established Kamo Tsuha Shrine, while those who moved to Higashimochida established Kuzuki Miya Toshi Shrine. Later, Takakamo Shrine became known as Kamigamo-sha, Miya Toshi Shrine as Nakagamo-sha, and Kamo Tsuha Shrine as Shimogamo-sha. The Engishiki Jinmyōchō (延喜式神名帳) lists it as "Takakamo Ajisukitakone Myojinja, four seats", classifying it as a Myōjin Taisha and noting that it received offerings for monthly, seasonal, and harvest festivals. The principal deity of Takakamo Shrine is Ajishiki Takahiconemikoto (迦毛之大御神). The grounds feature giant trees said to be over 1000 years old, a pond, and more. The tranquil atmosphere and sacred air are perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation. From mid-April to early May, over 2,200 Japanese primroses of 500 varieties bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Several associated and subsidiary shrines are also located within the grounds, each with its own unique features, making it worth taking your time to explore. Takakamo Shrine is a highly recommended sightseeing spot; a historic shrine steeped in tradition, where you can immerse yourself in history and enjoy the serene natural surroundings.
