Overview

Tokoji Temple serves as the family temple of the Mori clan, lords of the Hagi domain, housing the remains of the first lord, Mouri Hideyasu, and subsequent odd-numbered lords. Established in 1604 when Hideyasu constructed Hagi Castle, the temple sits at the heart of the castle town, and has long been cherished as a symbol of the Hagi domain's prosperity. The highlight of Tokoji Temple is undoubtedly the 603 stone lanterns within the temple grounds. These lanterns are treasured as reminders of the Hagi domain's former prosperity. Their presence creates a beautiful, ethereal atmosphere, soothing the hearts of visitors. Tokoji Temple also houses the mausoleums of the first lord, Mouri Hideyasu, and other successive lords. These mausoleums are precious historical sites that tell the story of the Hagi domain. Tokoji Temple provides a tranquil space where you can sense history and tradition. Visitors can spend peaceful moments, calming their minds and escaping the daily hustle and bustle. This temple, where history and tradition breathe within its quiet surroundings, is one of Hagi's leading tourist attractions. Be sure to visit!
