Overview

Anrakuji Temple is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. It boasts a history dating back to its establishment by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a temple to protect Fushimi Castle from evil spirits (kimon). Hideyoshi donated a five-storied pagoda and bell tower to the temple. The five-storied pagoda, built during Hideyoshi's era, stands approximately 30 meters tall and was a symbolic structure of Fushimi Castle. The bell tower was donated by Hideyoshi's wife, Kita-no-Mandokoro (Nene), and serves as a valuable cultural asset, reflecting the architectural style of Hideyoshi's time. Anrakuji Temple is not only known for its connection to Hideyoshi but also for its peaceful and serene atmosphere. Many historically significant buildings, including the five-storied pagoda, bell tower, and kuri (abbot's residence), remain on the temple grounds, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil escape.
