Otayama Jinja Shrine is located in Setana-cho, Kuyuon-gun, Hokkaido, and is counted among the five major sacred sites of southern Hokkaido. Its founding is said to date back to the Kakitsu era (1441-1443), and it has been an object of faith for the local people for centuries. Situated on the mid-slope of Mount Ota, the path to the shrine involves steep stairs and mountain trails, making the journey far from easy. However, the majestic shrine that appears after conquering this challenging path is a truly secluded sanctuary. Surrounded by magnificent nature, this tranquil space offers a chance to refresh your mind and body.
The enshrined deity of Otayama Jinja Shrine is Sarutahiko-o-kami, believed to grant blessings for guidance, warding off evil, and traffic safety. The area surrounding the shrine is also blessed with abundant nature, where flowers such as katakuri (dogtooth violet) and Ezo-ensosaku (Siberian squill) bloom in profusion. The sight of katakuri in full bloom during spring is breathtaking and attracts many visitors.
Otayama Jinja Shrine is a recommended spot for those who love hiking and want to enjoy nature. However, the path to the shrine is challenging, so those who lack confidence in their physical abilities should prepare thoroughly before visiting. Also, be aware of the presence of wildlife such as brown bears, horseflies, mosquitoes, wasps, and mamushi (Japanese pit vipers) in the surrounding area.
