A breathtaking cherry blossom spot in Gifu Prefecture, showcasing the beauty of cherry blossoms and a valley.
Kasama-ga-kei is a valley in Ikeda-cho, Gifu Prefecture, renowned as one of Gifu's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, offering stunning scenery of cherry blossoms and a dramatic valley. Formed by the erosion of the eastern slope of Mount Ikeda, a fault-cliff mountain, the valley boasts a rugged and steep terrain. Historically known as Kamagatani, this valley has long been celebrated for its cherry blossoms, with various species like yamazakura (mountain cherry), shidarezakura (weeping cherry), and edohigan cherry naturally growing along the valley. The Ogaki clan further enhanced the area by planting someiyoshino cherry trees as part of their land conservation efforts. Subsequent planting continued into the Meiji period and beyond, as part of tourism development, resulting in approximately 1,500 to 2,000 cherry trees lining the 2-kilometer-long valley. When these blossoms bloom simultaneously, they create a hazy effect from a distance, leading to its current name, Kasama-ga-kei. Known as one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in the three Tokai prefectures (Aichi, Gifu, and Mie), it's also included in the "Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots" selection. Kasama-ga-kei offers diverse scenery throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage. During cherry blossom season, the valley attracts numerous visitors who enjoy strolling along the valley, picnicking under the trees, and simply relaxing in the serene atmosphere. Interestingly, the area is also a major producer of Ibi tea, with tea plantations nestled amongst the cherry blossom trees, creating a unique contrast. The stunning juxtaposition of nature's grandeur and the delicate beauty of the cherry blossoms makes Kasama-ga-kei a must-visit destination in Gifu Prefecture.
