Overview

Aguni Island is a charming island located a short distance from Okinawa Island, accessible by ferry in approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes from Naha. Although small (approximately 13km in circumference), it offers a captivating blend of beautiful nature and rich history. Historically known as a millet producer (hence the name, which translates to "millet island"), Aguni Island today thrives on agriculture and fishing, with salt production recently gaining prominence. Its varied topography and landscape are shaped by higher elevations in the west, gently sloping eastward. The westernmost point, Mahanami Cape (also known as Fude-zaki), features dramatic white tuff cliffs, offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views. From here, you can admire the stunning contrast of the azure sea and white sand beaches, with Kuroshima, Tonaki Island, and the Kerama Islands visible in the distance. Yahija Coast, located beneath Mahanami Cape, is another iconic Aguni Island attraction. The unique, eroded shapes of the limestone cliffs towering over this coast create an aura of mystery. Aguni Island has also served as a filming location for several movies, including "Senkotsu" and "Nabii no Koi," making it a must-visit for film enthusiasts. Tours showcasing these filming locations are also available. Aguni Island is a captivating island where you can immerse yourself in beautiful nature and rich history. It's ideal for those seeking a relaxing escape or a chance to experience the unspoiled beauty of Okinawa.
