A precious place where you can see the Karatsu Kunchi floats up close.
Karatsu Kunchi is a traditional festival held in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Held annually from November 2nd to 4th, it's the annual festival of Karatsu Shrine. The biggest highlight of Karatsu Kunchi is the 13 gigantic festival floats (yakiyama). These floats are intricately crafted, featuring motifs of dragons, fish, and other creatures. Each float is owned by a different district in Karatsu City, and during the festival, they are pulled through the streets by the townspeople. At the Karatsu Kunchi Yakiyama Exhibition Hall, these floats are permanently displayed. All of the floats on display were made in the 19th century, serving as invaluable historical artifacts reflecting the technology and culture of that time. The exhibition hall allows you to observe the intricate details of the floats, and also features materials that help you learn about the history and culture of Karatsu Kunchi. There's even a corner showing videos of the festival, allowing you to experience the lively atmosphere. The Karatsu Kunchi Yakiyama Exhibition Hall offers a full immersion into the charm of Karatsu Kunchi. Be sure to visit if you're in Karatsu!
