Experience the history of Kyushu's railways from the Meiji era to the present day at this museum!
Located in Mojiko, the birthplace of Kyushu Railway, the Kyushu Railway Museum showcases the history of Kyushu's railways from the Meiji era to the present day through actual trains and valuable documents. The main building is the beautifully preserved red-brick former Kyushu Railway headquarters, built in 1891, offering a sense of history and substantial atmosphere. Inside, you'll find various period vehicles on display, including the Kyushu Railway passenger car Chibu 37 and a range of steam locomotives, electric trains, and freight cars. Many are well-preserved examples that once ran on the lines, providing a glimpse into the past. There's also a rich array of exhibits for both adults and children, including model trains, headmarks, and a driving simulator offering a chance to experience driving between Mojiko and Orido stations. In the simulator, you can sit in an actual driver's seat and operate the controls—a truly memorable experience, even for non-rail enthusiasts. Outside, the mini railway park lets you ride and operate model trains on a 450mm gauge track. Operating a model train from the driver's seat will be a fantastic experience for children. The Kyushu Railway Museum is more than just a museum; it's a railway theme park where you can experience railway history. It's highly recommended for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone interested in history.
