Overview

Rishiri Island is located in the northern part of Hokkaido, Japan, in the Sea of Japan. With an area of 182.11 square kilometers, it is the 18th largest island in Japan. It's a volcanic island centered around Mount Rishiri, with no recorded volcanic activity in historical times. The eastern half of the island belongs to Rishirifuji Town, and the western half to Rishiri Town. Islanders live along the coastline that encircles Mount Rishiri, which rises majestically in the island's center. Rishiri Island is known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse landscapes. It is part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, along with Rebun Island and the Sarobetsu Mire on the mainland. Within the national park, you'll find diverse scenery, including wetlands ablaze with alpine flowers and coastlines with emerald green waters. Mount Rishiri is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, offering opportunities for hiking and mountaineering. From the summit, at an elevation of 1,721 meters, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view; on a clear day, you can even see as far as Sakhalin. Rishiri Island is also famous for its abundant seafood. Rishiri kelp, in particular, is renowned nationwide as a premium ingredient for its exquisite flavor. Sea urchins raised on this kelp are also exceptionally delicious, drawing numerous tourists. Rishiri Island is a wonderful island packed with natural beauty and culinary delights. We highly recommend a visit!
