Yakushima Island

Overview

Yakushima Island is located at the southern tip of Kagoshima Prefecture. It covers an area of 504.88 square kilometers, with a circumference of 132 kilometers and a population of approximately 13,000. Registered as a World Heritage site in 1993, Yakushima is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty. Almost the entire island is covered in virgin forest, particularly the mountainous region centered around Mount Miyanoura-dake (1,935 meters), home to numerous giant trees, including the Jōmon Sugi, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The ocean surrounding the island, influenced by coral reefs and the Kuroshio Current, boasts a rich ecosystem teeming with diverse marine life. Yakushima enjoys a warm climate year-round, offering stunning scenery throughout the four seasons. Spring brings vibrant greenery to the mountains; summer showcases the brilliant blue sea and white sandy beaches bathed in sunlight; autumn paints the mountains with colorful foliage; and winter may even bring snowfall. The island is home to many giant trees, such as the Jōmon Sugi and Wilson's Stump, which are worth seeing in themselves.
