Udo Jingu Shrine, located in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a shrine whose main hall is dramatically situated within a cave on a stunning cliff face overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has been revered for generations as a deity of safe childbirth, child-rearing, and matchmaking.
The shrine's origins trace back to a legend about Emperor Jimmu's mother goddess, Toyo-tama-hime, who is said to have given birth there. The main shrine within the cave is beautifully painted in vibrant vermillion, creating a mystical space that harmonizes with the majestic natural surroundings.
One of Udo Jingu's highlights is the bizarre rock formation known as "Oni no sentaku-ita" (Devil's Washboard). This geological marvel formed over millions of years, from layers deposited between 10 million and 1 million years ago, sculpted by the relentless erosion of waves. It resembles a giant washboard, hence its name.
Another highlight is the 'Un-dama' (wish balls). These are unglazed clay balls believed to grant wishes. Throwing one into the hole on the back of the Kameishi (turtle stone) behind the main shrine is said to fulfill your desires if it lands successfully.
Udo Jingu Shrine is a truly unforgettable power spot, brimming with majestic nature and sacred energy. Visit and experience its mystical allure for yourself.
