Stunning Pacific Ocean views at Shikoku's southernmost point!
Ashizuri Cape is a cape in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, that extends into the Pacific Ocean. It's designated as part of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Known as the southernmost point of Shikoku Island, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Historically, Ashizuri Cape was also called Sata Misaki. Originally, the official name was "Ashizuri Saki," but with the development of tourism, the widely used name "Ashizuri Misaki" became the official name. The area around Ashizuri Cape is developed as Ashizuri Cape Park, featuring a 2km-long nature trail leading to the Ashizuri Cape observation deck. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. In December 2023, a new observation plaza was also developed at Tengu no Hana (Tengu's Nose) on the east side of Ashizuri Cape. Many locations along the coast offer stunning views of both sunrise and sunset. Subtropical plants such as camellias, *ubamegashi* oak, and *biro* (Chinese fan palm) thrive around Ashizuri Cape. The Matsuo Akou tree grove in the Matsuo Shrine grounds is designated as a national natural monument. Ashizuri Cape is also known as a prime fishing ground for skipjack tuna. However, it's also located in a typhoon-prone area and frequently experiences strong winds. While Ashizuri Cape is generally recognized as the southernmost point (cape) of Shikoku, it's not technically the very southernmost point. The southernmost point of the Shikoku mainland is near the southern end of Naga-saki, approximately 1 kilometer west of Ashizuri Cape. The southernmost point of the entire Shikoku region, including islands, is Okinoshima Island, belonging to Sukumo City. It's important to note that reaching the tip of Naga-saki safely from the mainland is impossible. Ashizuri Cape is a captivating spot where history and nature harmoniously coexist. Enjoy the magnificent scenery, reflect on its history, and feel the breath of nature.
