Admire the beautiful white-walled streetscapes reminiscent of the Edo period and take a stroll through history.
Uenomachi in Uwacho is a district designated for the preservation of important traditional buildings in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture. Once a prosperous 'zaigo-machi' of the Uwajima clan, it retains the charm of its Edo-era streetscapes. The sight of white-walled merchant houses lining the streets feels like stepping back in time. Numerous historical structures are scattered throughout, including the Kaimei School (an Important Cultural Property of Japan), the Sueyoshi family residence and its torii gate (city-designated cultural properties), and the Uenomachi Christian Church (a Taisho-era building). Uenomachi thrived as a vital hub for the Uwajima clan, serving as a distribution center and post town. As a result, many merchant houses, storehouses, and temples remain, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the time. The streets also feature cafes and boutiques housed in old machiya (traditional wooden townhouses), creating a unique atmosphere where history and modernity blend. When visiting Uenomachi, we recommend taking your time to explore the town. Contemplate history as you admire the beautiful white-walled streets. Picking up some local specialties and traditional crafts will also make for wonderful souvenirs.
