Matsuyama Castle boasts a rich history, constructed over approximately a quarter-century starting in 1602 by Kato Kiyomasa, one of the "Seven Spears" who served under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and famously fought in the Battle of Shizugatake. Ownership of the castle subsequently changed hands between the Matsudaira and Hisamatsu clans, lasting until the Meiji Restoration. Designated as one of only 12 remaining original keeps (genzon tenshu), it stands as an Important Cultural Property.
