Please note that access to the Tenshu閣 (castle keep) is via stairs only. There is no elevator. A barrier-free restroom is available at the Honmaru entrance.
Marugame Castle is a hilltop castle built on 110m-high Marugameyama in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. Its donjon is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is one of the twelve remaining original wooden donjon. The entire castle site is a designated National Historic Site.
The history of Marugame Castle began in 1597 when it was constructed by Ikoma Chikamasa. Ownership changed hands through the Ikoma, Kyogoku, and Matsudaira clans before the Meiji Restoration.
Marugame Castle's donjon is a magnificent three-story structure offering panoramic views of Marugame City and the Seto Inland Sea. Around the donjon, you can find historical sites such as the remains of the honmaru (main enclosure) and ninomaru (second enclosure), offering glimpses into the daily life and culture of the time.
