A park built on the site of a World War I prisoner of war camp, now a symbol of Japanese-German friendship.
Doitsu Mura Park, located in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, is built on the site of the former Bando Prisoner of War Camp, where German soldiers were held during World War I. From 1914 to 1918, approximately 4,000 German soldiers were interned at the camp. After the war, the park was built as a symbol of Japanese-German friendship. The park features several structures with a German atmosphere, such as the German Bridge and the Megane Bridge (eyeglasses bridge), making it a popular spot for photography. The German Soldier Memorial is a precious historical site that conveys the horrors of war. Well-maintained walking paths wind through the park, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty throughout the year. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, and the autumn foliage is stunning, attracting many tourists year-round. Doitsu Mura Park offers a unique blend of history and nature. We highly recommend a visit.
