Iya Kazurabashi is a vine bridge located in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, spanning the Iya River. Historically used as a vital transportation route, this vine bridge now captivates tourists as a precious piece of traditional culture. Constructed with thick tree trunks as supports and woven with kudzu vines, the bridge measures 42 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and stands 12 meters above the river's surface. Walking across it provides a thrilling experience due to its swaying motion. Moreover, from the bridge, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Iya Valley. Iya Kazurabashi is a valuable tourist spot where nature and history intertwine. Legend has it that during the Heian period, the Taira clan, who ruled this area, built the bridge using kudzu vines so it could be easily severed to prevent pursuit during their horseback training. In the Edo period, woodcutters and fishermen reportedly used this bridge to cross the river. Currently, the bridge's kudzu vines are replaced every ten years. Local residents harvest the vines from the mountains and meticulously weave them onto the bridge by hand. Therefore, the Kazurabashi bridge is deeply connected to the lives of the local people. Iya Kazurabashi is a precious traditional culture born from the power of nature and human ingenuity. We invite you to visit and experience its unique charm firsthand.
