Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium has a rich history, opening to the public on June 1, 1930, as the Kyoto University Faculty of Science Seto Marine Biological Laboratory Aquarium. Its origins trace back to the aquarium room of the Kyoto Imperial University Faculty of Science's Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, established on July 28, 1922. Situated in Shirahama-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, it operates as an affiliated facility of the Kyoto University Field Science Education and Research Center, Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, functioning as part of its research activities. It's unique as the only facility of its kind among those belonging to Japanese national universities designated as museum-equivalent facilities under the Museum Act. The aquarium displays approximately 500 species of marine life indigenous to the Shirahama area. Its invertebrate collection is particularly noteworthy, featuring 451 species and 6349 specimens annually (2012 data). Beyond observing rare marine life and ecosystems firsthand, visitors can also witness ongoing research. A beloved attraction for people of all ages, it reopened on July 5, 2014, after renovations, including seismic strengthening, resulting in a safer and more comfortable experience. The surrounding area offers additional attractions such as Shirahma Beach and Engetsu Island, making it a perfect destination for a full day of exploration.
