Engetsujima, the symbol of Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture. The mystical arch, sculpted by wind and waves, offers breathtaking sunset views.
Engetsujima is a small island in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, characterized by a naturally formed arch created by wind and waves. Its official name is "Takashima," but it's called "Engetsujima" (Full Moon Island) because of the perfectly round sea-eroded cave in its center. While not particularly large – approximately 130 meters north-south, 35 meters east-west, and 25 meters high – its unique shape and beautiful scenery have endeared it to people for generations. Engetsujima is considered a symbol of Shirahama and is within walking distance from Shirahma Beach. Viewing Engetsujima at sunset, with the backdrop of Shirahma Beach's white sand and blue sea, is highly recommended. The sunset is particularly spectacular during the spring and autumn equinoxes, when the sun sets directly through the island's arch. This breathtaking view has earned Engetsujima a spot in Japan's Top 100 Sunsets, making it a popular destination. Engetsujima also offers a glimpse into Shirahama's history. The island was once a fishing base, with fishermen's huts and a lighthouse. While these structures are no longer standing, remnants of that era can still be found in the surrounding area. Engetsujima is a captivating tourist spot blending nature and history. Make sure to visit when you're in Shirahama.
