The Himeji City Museum of Art is a red-brick museum situated just east of the Himeji Castle, a National Treasure. Originally a Japanese Army weapons warehouse, the building has been beautifully repurposed as a museum. Its historical atmosphere, combined with the stunning views of the verdant Himeji Castle, creates a captivating location.
Inside, you'll find renowned Western art pieces, including paintings and sculptures by Monet and Rodin. A must-see is the collection of modern Western art assembled by Kuniomi Kunitomi, a local physician. Donated in 1994 to commemorate Himeji Castle's inscription as a World Heritage Site, the Kunitomi Collection boasts masterpieces of modern French painting, such as Monet's "Sunset at the Port of Argenteuil" and Rodin's "Walking Man."
The museum also boasts a substantial collection of Belgian art, featuring works by Felicien Rops and James Ensor. This focus reflects Himeji City's sister city relationship with Charleroi, Belgium, and underscores the museum's commitment to fostering friendship between the two cities.
The Himeji City Museum of Art is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can experience history and culture. Be sure to visit it alongside the Himeji Castle, a National Treasure.
