Tenryu-ji Temple is a Zen temple built in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji to commemorate Emperor Go-Daigo. As the founder of the Muromachi shogunate, Ashikaga Takauji, after his conflict with Emperor Go-Daigo, established Tenryu-ji Temple to offer prayers for the emperor's soul. As the head temple of the Rinzai Tenryu-ji school, it has since produced many Zen monks and significantly contributed to the development of Zen Buddhism in Japan.
Within the temple grounds lies the "Sogenchi Garden," designated as a national place of scenic beauty. This garden's magnificence lies in its breathtaking view, utilizing the stunning natural beauty of Arashiyama as a backdrop. A strolling-style garden centered around a pond, it displays a different beauty throughout the four seasons. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, while autumn brings vibrant autumn leaves, soothing the hearts of visitors year-round.
