Metasequoia Avenue

Overview

The Metasequoia Avenue is a 2.4km-long avenue lined with approximately 500 Metasequoia trees along the road leading to Makino Highland in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. It began in 1981 as part of the "Makino learning from the earth" children's farm development project by the Makino Town Fruit Production Cooperative. Since then, it has been nurtured and cherished by the cooperative members and local residents, resulting in its magnificent current appearance. Metasequoia is a deciduous coniferous tree belonging to the genus Metasequoia in the family Cupressaceae, originating from China. Its Japanese name is Akebonosugi. It's named Metasequoia because its appearance resembles that of Sequoia, which is said to reach a maximum height of 115 meters. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery throughout the year, from the fresh green of spring, the lush greenery of summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, to the snowy landscapes of winter. The autumn foliage season is particularly breathtaking, with golden Metasequoia trees creating a stunning vista against the backdrop of a clear blue sky and white clouds. The Metasequoia Avenue offers a different face in each season, making it a place you'll never tire of visiting. Furthermore, you can walk along the avenue, adding to the charm of enjoying nature firsthand. There are many tourist spots in the surrounding area, including Makino Pickland and Makino Highland, making it a great place for a full day of fun.
