Experience Yayoi-era life through reconstructed buildings and unearthed artifacts!
Overview
Located in Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the Toro Ruins are the remains of a late Yayoi period village discovered in 1943 during the construction of a military factory. Designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan, this site, with its associated paddy field remains, is considered an important location for research into Yayoi-era rice cultivation. Reconstructed pit dwellings and elevated-floor storehouses allow visitors to imagine daily life at that time. A diverse collection of unearthed artifacts, including pottery, wooden objects, stone tools, and metal implements, are displayed, offering insights into the technology and culture of the period. Among them, the "Shizuoka Prefecture Toro Ruins Excavated Artifacts," designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, are invaluable records of the daily life and technology of the time. When visiting the Toro Ruins, be sure to also visit the adjacent Shizuoka City Toro Museum. The museum offers exhibitions, videos, and hands-on exhibits related to the ruins. With a children's corner, families can enjoy a visit without worry. The Toro Ruins are a spot enjoyable for history buffs and children alike. Come and experience the romance of the Yayoi period!
