One of Kanazawa's leading museums, offering a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy contemporary art. Its distinctive circular design creates a park-like atmosphere, with art displayed both indoors and outdoors.
The Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, a municipal museum opened in 2004, houses a diverse collection of contemporary art. Affectionately known as "Marubii" (meaning "circle building"), its iconic glass-walled circular structure is instantly recognizable. Designed by the world-famous architectural duo SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), the museum aims to be an open, park-like space where anyone can easily engage with contemporary art. Various artworks are displayed both indoors and outdoors, making it accessible to all. Inside, you'll find many interactive pieces and installations that utilize the entire room as part of the artwork. A permanently installed work by James Turrell is even located in the free admission area, providing easy access to contemporary art experiences. Many of these pieces are commission works, specially created for the museum. Located near historical sites such as Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle, the museum serves as an ideal base for exploring Kanazawa. The Kanazawa 21st Century Museum offers a memorable experience for everyone, regardless of their interest in modern art.
