Shibata Castle is a castle located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. It was originally constructed in 1590 by Shigeie Shibata. Situated on a hill overlooking the vast Echigo Plain, it was once known as the "number one castle of Echigo." Shigeie Shibata served as a retainer of Uesugi Kenshin, the Koku-shugo-dai (deputy governor) of Echigo Province, before becoming a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Strategically located and boasting strong defenses, Shibata Castle was considered one of the most formidable castles in Echigo Province. The current Shibata Castle features a reconstructed keep (tenshu) completed in 1963, now open to the public as a historical museum. From the keep, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Echigo Plain and the Sea of Japan. The castle also houses numerous exhibits on the history and culture of Shibata Castle, allowing visitors to imagine what life was like in those times.
