Established to protect the kimon of Edo Castle, experience a moment of peace and tranquility at Kaneiji Temple, steeped in history and serenity, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Kaneiji Temple was established in 1625 (Kan'ei 2) by the chief priest Tenkai, praying for the stability of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the peace of all people. It was built on the Ueno plateau, corresponding to the kimon (demon's gate) direction of Edo Castle. Later, the mausoleum of the fourth shogun, Tokugawa Ietsuna, was built, making it also the ancestral temple of the shogunate. With the appointment of the head priest of Toei-zan from the Imperial family, it became the largest and most prestigious temple in Japan during the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration, it suffered from the effects of the haibutsu kishaku (the destruction of Buddhist temples and images) and its territory was drastically reduced. However, it still stands proudly within Ueno Park. Kaneiji Temple is popular as a place to relax and unwind, away from the urban clamor. The grounds are full of highlights, including the mausoleums of the Tokugawa shoguns and buildings that retain the architectural style of the Edo period. The beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons is another attraction. From the cherry blossoms of spring, the greenery of summer, the autumn foliage, and the winter snow scenes, you can enjoy beautiful views throughout the year. There is also a tea room and garden on the grounds where you can feel the seasonal atmosphere. Kaneiji Temple is a place where you can experience history and culture, and spend a peaceful time.
