A lush garden in the heart of the city, this oasis preserves the charm of an Edo-era strolling garden.
Overview
Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden was originally created in the early Edo period by Obokubo Tadato, a powerful official (roju). After changing hands several times throughout history, it was donated to the city of Tokyo in 1924 and opened to the public. The garden, created during the Genroku period (late 17th - early 18th century), is a strolling-style garden featuring a tidal pond (shioiri). While lacking grand stonework, the careful design of the land and placement of elements exemplifies the artistry of Edo-era gardens.
The garden features a pond, artificial hills, and bridges, all designed for a leisurely stroll. The pond was once a tidal pond, its appearance changing with the ebb and flow of the sea. While now freshwater, it still evokes the atmosphere of its past.
Highlights include snow-viewing lanterns (yukimi-doro) and a wisteria trellis. The garden bursts with seasonal flowers, offering a tranquil escape from city life.
Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden is a precious place for a peaceful stroll, offering a respite from the urban hustle. Experience the serenity and history, and find a moment of peace.
