Overview

Daijizō Banna-ji Temple's origins lie in the establishment of a residence by Minamoto Yoshiyasu, the ancestor of the Ashikaga clan. It's believed that in 1196, Ashikaga Yoshikane built the "Horiuchi-mido," a small temple housing his family's principal Buddha, Daijizō. In 1234, Ashikaga Yoshiuji further developed the temple complex, establishing it as the family temple of the Ashikaga clan. Banna-ji Temple stands as a precious site for history and architecture buffs, preserving the remnants of a samurai residence from the late Kamakura period. The main hall, designated a National Treasure, was built by Ashikaga Sadauji (father of Takauji) and exemplifies the architectural style of the late Kamakura period. This 5-bay by 5-bay gabled hall with hipped and gabled roof covered with ceramic tiles is a rare example of a Shingon Buddhist hall incorporating Zen architectural features. The use of tsumegumi (closely fitted joinery), chimaki (bamboo-leaf shaped supports) on the pillars, san-karado (lattice doors), and tateita-kabe (vertical plank walls) all highlight Zen influences. However, it also features elements of traditional Japanese architecture, such as a sunken ceiling and a wooden floor. It's a significant example of early Zen Buddhist hall architecture within a Shingon temple, and an important example of early Zen style in the Kanto region. The moat surrounding the temple retains its Kamakura-era appearance, evoking the atmosphere of a samurai residence. Large carp swim in the moat, contributing to a peaceful ambiance. The temple's beauty changes with the seasons; cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall offer different vistas for every visit. Many precious cultural assets remain within the grounds, including seated statues of successive Ashikaga shoguns and Fudō Myōō, offering deeper insight into the Ashikaga clan's history. Daijizō Banna-ji Temple provides a tranquil escape surrounded by history and nature. Explore various facets of the temple: view the national treasure main hall, stroll along the Kamakura-era moat, and reflect on the history of the Ashikaga clan. Find solace in the quiet and immerse yourself in a moment of history and nature.
