Overview

Shinmiya Kumano Shrine is located in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture. Legend says it was established in 1055 during the Genroku era, when Minamoto no Yorinobu prayed for victory in the Zenkunen War. Later, in 1089, during the Gosannen War, Minamoto no Yoshiie relocated and constructed the present shrine, making it an ancient and historic site. The main hall, "Kumano Jinja Nagadana," designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is a Heian-period building in the style of a palace. The adjacent Kumano Jinja Treasure Hall houses numerous nationally and prefecture-designated cultural properties, including a bronze bowl, which are open to the public for viewing. The sacred gingko tree in front of the Nagadana is approximately 800 years old, stands 30 meters tall, and has a trunk circumference of 8.1 meters. Designated as a Kitakata City Natural Monument, it transforms the surrounding area into a golden carpet in autumn, captivating countless visitors.
