INFO
The Sannai Maruyama site can only be visited via the Jomon Period Museum.
Located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, the Sannai Maruyama Site is a magnificent settlement from the Jomon period, offering a rare glimpse into the daily lives, culture, and advanced technology of its inhabitants. Flourishing from the middle Jomon period to the late middle Jomon period (approximately 5,900 to 4,200 years ago), it covered an area of approximately 40 hectares. Excavations have unearthed dwellings, graves, roads, and storage pits, revealing details of daily life. A highlight is the large-scale buildings. The massive 14.7-meter-tall post-and-beam structure, supported by six pillars, not only showcases the advanced architectural techniques of the time but also suggests a building with social authority and possibly ritualistic significance. Reconstructed pit dwellings and raised-floor storehouses offer a tangible experience of life in the Jomon period. Thousands of artifacts including pottery, stone tools, and clay figurines have been unearthed at Sannai Maruyama, revealing the depth and breadth of Jomon culture, providing insight into their diet, beliefs, and artistic expressions. Visiting Sannai Maruyama provides a deeper understanding of Jomon life and culture, revealing its connections to modern society. As a valuable World Heritage site, it encourages reflection on the importance of preserving history for future generations.
